Hey everyone, hope the day is treating you all well.

I did a serach for this, but with a lot of varied results, and none that really answered my specific question.

I'm gonna try making my own protein shakes for after I work out. Trying to get in that extra protein intake. I was hopeing someone could tell me if this is a good idea for me to do. I'm thinking about half a cup of 1% milk, a tbl spoon or 2 of peanut butter. Maybe some fresh fruit. I'm guessing I'm supposed to add some ice? And maybe a pack of plain oatmeal. A lot of calories, but isn't it all healthy fat and should really help with my protein intake. Any suggestions would be great, thanks!

Judging by your profile, that's exactly the opposite of what you should do. Healthy fat or no, a calorie surplus isn't going to help you lose weight but you'll definitely see an increase in body fat. In your case, I'd just use plain ol' protein powder mixed in water.

At this point, I'm pretty confused... :surprised:

My fitness plan is set up so that I lose weight and tone up. I've been trying to use my diet tracker, but it all seems hopeless... For starters, I'm supposed to get 205g of protein. I'm sitting at around 60 or so right now at 3:13 pm. I thought that by making this shake I would get a lot of extra protien to my body after a workout and hope that it would help fill in the large protien gap. But you are saying that this would only add body fat?

You will have to forgive me, I have like 5 people telling me what to do. My former coach is telling me to go light on carbs, the FT trainer is telling me to take in all these calories and proteins and carbs and what not. And now a protein shake apparently will add body fat when I'm tyring to get rid of it hah.

I'm not trying to sound like a whiner or anything, I'm just honestly lost and confused right now as to what I should do to acheive my goals. I'm almost to the point of quiting, but I won't allow myself to quit.

For example. Today I ate 1 banana and 1 pack of plan oatmeal for breakfest. A few hours later, I ate a salad. 2 cups of chopped lettuce, 1/2 a cup of chopped cucumber, 1 and 1/2 tbl spoons of low fat/calorie salad dressing (its like 30 cals per server, 2 servers, and I only did 1 and 1/2) and 2 whole hard boild eggs for protein. About 30 mins ago, I ate 1 piece of whole wheat bread with 2 tbl spoons of peanut butter (this was going to be my pre wo meal). After the wo I was going to make some type of protein shake, and then for dinner tonight I was going to decide with my fiance.

Is this diet totally off for the goals I'm working for? Tone and lean. I've come to realize thanks to this site, that weight lifting is a part of loseing weight, not just cardio, so I've decided to do 2 days of cardio with 4 days of lifting.

I'm honestly confused, and would really appreciate anyones help. I simply want to lose about 30 lbs, and I'm more lost as to how to lose it now then I was when I first started trying to lose it...

to me it seems that your not getting enough calories try to have about 2200-2500 cals a day and eat every few hours or so like you was doin and do some cardio and for protein i would just do what he said and buy the powder

OK from what I read I think you should do the following...
Limit carbs for before 6PM if possible or stop eating them 4 hours before bed-they get stored as fat while you sleep.
Limit fruit for before 12-reason is the sugar.
Try eating egg whites instead of full eggs, this lowers the fat count.
Do you like cottege cheese? Very low cals and fat-packed with protein!
What about tuna, chicken or turkey? You can get all of these things in the can if you are in a hurry or need something compact. Add this to your salad for more protein or eat plain w/S&P.
It is best to get your protein from whole foods but I know it is difficult. Take a scoop of Whey Protein w/water after your work out. Drink 1/2 of it asap and sip the last have over 20-30 mins.(Designer brand in choc. is my fave)
Now I see you must LOVE PB, I know I do too.
Get the natural PB and limit it. It is still high in fat but the natural doesn't have the hydrogenated fat which is bad.
Also up your cardio to 4-5 30 min sessions a week, try seperating your weights and cardio by 6 hours if possible otherwise do weights first, cardio 2nd.
Make sure you are pushing yourself during workouts.
It is quality not quanity.
Also give yourself 1 to 2 days of complete rest to allow your muscles to repair themselves.

Hope I have helped some! Good luck! :)

rainnin hit it on the head and explained it a lot better than I did. Anyone that hasn't been overweight (I have) can't really relate and I should have expanded my post considerably. What I meant about your shake -- You need the nutrients from all the food you mentioned but you don't need the high fats and sugar. I love fruit but when I'm on a cut, they're off limits. I also love natural peanut butter and could eat a jar at a sitting but don't. I will use a tablespoon occasionally as a cheat meal. :) If I was in your shoes, I'd use protein powder more to get the needed protein. Granted natural foods are better for you but the powder makes it more painless till you get your diet adapted. Although I hate pushing supplements, you might be a prime candidate for cAMP. You can read about that in the Supplement forum. Rainnin was also right about the whole eggs. The yolk is full of calories and fat. I eat around 4 dozen eggs in some weeks and in others I eat 3 or 5 cans of tuna during the day supplementing that with some healthy high grain cereal. Also, you'd be surprised how many good tasting bean dishes you can make and when you make it, you have some pretty nutritious meals for several days.

Correction - when I said 4 dozen eggs, I should have said egg whites.

Thanks so much guys. I was pretty down today with it all, but this really helped bring me back up. I'm gonna go look into buying some protein powder for my workouts, and I'm gonna try making some adjustments to my diet. I didn't know the egg yolk was so bad for you, so I'll deff cut that out and stick to the whites. I've actually never tried tuna or cottege cheese. Neither never appealed to me smell wise, but I think I'm gonna suck it up and try it and see if I can keep it down. I find it so hard to get enough calaries. I never knew how hard it was untill I started keeping up with my diets. Thanks a ton for everyones help and motivation.

travais - one other thing that helps a lot is (assuming you can stomach the cottage cheese, low fat by the way :) ) eat 3 or 4 tablespoons of it before you go to sleep at night. It has a good affect and you won't wake up as hungry. Tuna isn't the best tasting of all foods, especially right out of the can but once you get used to it, it's really satisfying.

I actually never wake up very hungry. I usually force myself to eat the banana and pack of oatmeal, simply because If I don't, I'll be starving before a few hours after waking up and just stuff myself. So since I don't wake up very hungry, should I still take a few tablespoonss of the cottage cheese?

It's not so much the morning hunger as it gives your system something to keep it moving through the night. This way you aren't forcing your system to eat up protein (muscle) for nutrients.
