I was just reading on another site that there is no real time period that you should stay at your maintenance level before cutting or adding calories, is this true?..I remeber bb1 saying that you should stay at maintenance for a few weeks before adding calories or dropping calories depending on whether your bulking or cutting. Due to the fact that if you add calories to quickly you will add the wrong weight is this correct?

While it is correct that there is no "set" time, if you ask folks who increase too rapidly what happens, you may well hear pretty much the same thing. The 2 week period I suggested is just that, a suggestion, but the choice is indeed yours to do. Just give yourself some time, it may save you some grief in a very short period of time.

I hear here ya Ron, it does make sense that you shouldn't just jump to a 500 calorie increase, and just with going to maintenance and a little change to my macros i have noticed a nice difference and will stay at maintenance for a little over a week. as i add calories i should drop fat, right?..I also read that fat is bad during a bulk. i was gonna stay at a 40/40/20 but i might give a 40/50/10 macro a try a little later in my bulk if the 40/40/20 doesn't work.

Yep, you will be increasing carbs, so I would definitely decrease fat intake.Try to limit your fat intake to strictly Omega 3's if you can..i.e..flax oil, fish oil, and/or a bit of olive oil, etc.

That's what i have been doing all flax seed oil, olive oil, and fish oil. It's tough keeping everything in the right macro range while raising calories since fat is much more calorie dense than protein and carbs. I'm at about 257g. protein all ready, 300g. of protein isn't too much at 185lbs. right?

no...
you must at least consume 1.5 -2g of protein daily for muscle building. AT LEAST.
Thats more or less 277.5-370 g
it looks like you are in the middle.

You say your goal is to lose 30 lbs., will settle for 20. In either case, the weight loss and definition program on this site would be good for you. Clean up your diet to go with it(for this is really key in any program you do), and you will get results.

JustinE, I am Justin W, and its funny because I weight between 180-190 at all times. I am even your height almost exactly. I would like to achieve your gains and be as in shape as you are since we are so close. I lift
Day 1 - Legs
Day 2 - Back
Day 3 - Shoulders
Day 4 - Arms
Day 5 - Chest

I do abs about every other day if not the same day.

I would like to try to start communicating with you over AIM and ask you more questions if you would allow it, my name is JustinTylerW on AIM.

I also have questions on diet, I just really want to try to follow your plan for dieting/training and meet a new weight training friend.

Hopefully we can do this

Hey JustinW, What is your bodyfat % right now? What are your goals? To get bigger or more definition? When i started i was about 170 with a pretty low bodyfat so i just ate a ton not as strict as i do now but as clean as i could while living on campus in a year i was up to about 186 and just finished another bulking cycle and ended at about 194 and i'm beginning my cutting cycle. I picked out a program here on FT and looked to the boards for advice when i needed it. I don't have AIM but you an send me and instant message here if you'd like. Here's my diet:
Breakfast-1 cup oatmeal 5 eggwhites 1 sc. protein
PWO protein drink simple carbs
PPWO meal-52g. cooked chicken, 1 cup broccoli with 2 fish oil capsules adn 1\2 cup baked bean baked beans(check sugar in these if they are the canned type)black eye peas will work well.(Post cardio meal is ground beef baked beans, broccolli and fish oil)
Lunch-3 1\2 oz. steak 2 oz. whole wheat pasta 1 cup veggies
snack-6 oz. Tuna with 1/2 cup brown rice 1 cup veggies
dinner-6 oz. chicken 2 cups veggies 1 tbsp. flax oil
Before bed- 1/2 c. cottage cheese 2 tbsp. flax meal 1/2 sc. of blended protein containing casein protein

This what i use for both cutting and bulking all i do is add or subtract protions depending on where i'm at. This is a very clean diet and should work well. But this is just a sample and our metabolism is probably not the same so you will need to tweak it a bit to meet your body. Hope that helps. Good luck:big_smile:

im starting a new bulking and cutting cycle this january. im going to be bulking for 4 weeks then maintaining for 2 week then cutting for 4 weeks.

I read on a different website that you see most of your benefits within the first 4 weeks of any cycle and then the benefits start to slow down. It makes sence to me but it seems every web site says something different. i wanted to hear what you guys' opinions on this.

Also i was wondering if my maintenance diet should just be an average of the Protein, Carbs, and Fat that i get from my bulking and cutting diets.

Thanks.

I don't know, it takes your body a couple weeks to adjust to a different diet. If you are coming off of a severe cut for instance, you may actually continue to lose weight even after increasing your calories for a week or more. I would say run your bulk cycles 6-8 weeks, then cut for the needed asthetic visual to make you happy.
