i heard about a way to benchpress from a pretty strong friend of mine. He said its good to start with the weights that u can do for 5 sets of 10 reps, and then later when u get stronger, u can change it to like 3 sets of 20 reps, or something like that and keep doing that until u are strong enough to bench that weights for 50 reps at in 1 set, and then u can add more weights to it, and repeat the steps. is that a good way to bench press????

sounds kinda strange to me.. thats more shifting to a focus on muscular endurance rather than building strength. i think if you're looking to build strength, you should start doing the exercise with reps of 12- 15 until you get your technique down, with sets of 1- 3. Work at less than 70% of your IRM for this phase, and give yourself rests up to 1 min between sets. When you feel you're ready to move on, shift in to more of a 8- 10 rep range, with sets of 1- 4 at a 70- 80% IRM range. You can extend your rest period here between sets to anywhere up to 2 minutes. I hope this answers your q..

freakbomb, take a look through the powerlifting thread. We have some great bench pressing topics and routines.
Good luck!

I have heard.....of a similar routine but in terms of time....e.g. 10 push ups....then rest 30 sec and do another and repeat...for 5-10 sets....then as you progress you keep decreasing rest time until you can do 1 big set of 50-100....

however what you mentioned is not necessarily a good way to progress...or at least effeciently/effectively....

like rev suggested....check the powerlifting thread for the most effective ways of progressing in bench press....
