Hello everbody. My name is Brian. I thought I might give this site a try. Anything to get me motivated to exercise and eat right...again. My profile is filled out, but it is always subject to change, to make it better. If anyone has any info on why a knee will all of the sudden start hurting when it remains in the bent position for a while, It would be helpfull.
Thanks Brian

Welcome to ft, Brian! So, exactly when does your knee begin to hurt? During weight lifting? Or just generally speaking?

Hi Brian, welwome here.
Maybe you have over trained your knee with too much running (and chocks). Tell a little bit more and we'll try to help you.

My knee initially started to hurt around the summer of 1999 when I increased my running to around 40 miles a week. I gradually cut down the running, and eventually stop about 2 years ago. I saw a couple of Doctors, one was a orthopedic surgeon, and the only advise he gave me was to rest it and maybe do leg lifts. The leg lifts only aggrevated the knee, so I didn't do those for long. Right now I only feel minor discomfort when: (1) sitting with my leg bent for an extended period of time, (2) going up a flight of stairs or kneeling/squating, and (3) this might sound weird, but before a major rain/snow storm.
I would like to start running again, but I know if I do right now with out having the knee treated it will just get worse again. I do some kickboxing right now, that doesn't hurt the knee at all. Actually, I think it might be helping the knee, I don't know why. But, kickboxing to me is not the same as running. I really enjoyed losing myself in the run, if anyone knows what I'm talking about.
Thanks for time Brian

NEVER do leg lifts with an injured knee....... Geez those docs should know better......
The prob with your knee is probably from all the impacts/chocks from the running. You can't do anything about that except buying some expensive shoes and avoid running on the street.
You can also strenghten your muscles around your knee joints by doing leg presses (don't use any bandages around your knee, but don't take too heavy!).
Finally try taking some supplements as Chondroitin and glucosamine.
Be careful with the kick boxing thou, you are in big risk of twisting the knee (since it's already weak).
Glad to help you Brian. If any other questions, we'll be here.

Brian,
Do you also experience popping or grinding in your knee? Knee pain is one of the most common complaints with runners and there are many things that could be wrong depending on where you feel the pain. I'm also a runner going on 20 years with very bad knees. I'm having surgery on my right knee in a few weeks to repair torn and worn cartilage. This is just 6 months after having the same thing as well as a lateral release of the kneecap on the left knee. My symptoms sound very similar to yours. If you experience discomfort that is weather related there is the possibility that you may have some arthritis in there too. Active stretching will help. Avoid those leg extensions. If you are having kneecap tracking problems, this will only aggravate the problem and cause further cartilage wear.
Good luck with your knee and making your goals.
Nancy
