Hey guys. Was wondering if any of you could give me some info on diabetes. My grandmother had it, and I think I might be closer to it than I realized. I am very overweight(trying to fix that of course) and for about a year now I have been having problems with my legs. I will be laying on the couch watching tv or something, and they will start to get tingly and "antsy" they just don't feel right. If I go take a warm bath and rub my legs, it goes away, but I heard that leg problems can be the start of diabetes, and it makes me a little scared. Any help would be appreciated!!

See a doctor. Get a blood test. Those are symptoms one gets usually in the fingertips and toes at the onset. Don't mean to scare you, but just see your doc.

Go to a doctor and get it checked out. Are you having blurred vision? Are you peeing constantly? I mean even after you are finished, do you still have the urge to pee? These are the symptoms that my father had when he was diagnosed.

I can totally sympathize, Cristalbelle; it's something that I'm in the process of dealing with myself right now.
Risk of Diabetes can be increased with a genetic history. My advice is to go see your Dr. He'll probably refer you to an Endocronologist; get it checked out ahead of time - might as well rule it out now, and try to do some things to help lower your risk. If you are diagnosed with Diabetes, it's not going to disappear. There is no sense trying to ignore it; deal with it, and you'll be able to live your life better.

Good luck.....

I don't get tingly toes or fingers, my vision isn't blurry and I don't have trouble peeing. My legs did start to get weird after I had 2 cans of soda in a row last night(this is not a normal habit) We don't have medical insurance, and can't afford to pay for a Dr. in cash, so I guess I will just have to continue with my diet/exersize and see what happens until I can get to the dr.

Cristal,

Here is a site with a free screening test. You answer some questions and it will help you decide how at risk you are. There is also some good information about complications and symptoms. If you think you have a problem, don't wait to long. I know that funds can be tight, but this is a disease that can escalate into much more serious problems if left untreated. Anyway, this site may be a good starting point. http://www.defeatdiabetes.org/screeningtest.htm

Cristal, you can also buy test strips to test your urine. Ask a pharmacist, and if you know someone who has a glucose meter Stick your finger and see what the reading is. Just a cheaper way to check.

Yeah the test strips for urine are good they will tell you if you have ketones. They are caused by a starving body not able to get energy from carbs so the bod turns to protein IE your muscles to get energy.

I took the test that daniel posted, and it says I might have pre-diabetes, and to get fitness and diet into my life. I will go see a doctor as soon as funds are available, and thanks for the help! :)

Well then Hec, maybe you should go see the doc if you are worried about it. I am going to keep doing what I am doing, and take the test again in a month or so. Hopefully by then I will have been able to see a doc myself!
