run with a little weight on your legs and hands. push yourself... do start up sprints, do your full distance. and tommorrow put the weight down and it's easier isn't it?
before a race don't try to lose fat/weight. ensure you have plenty carbs and energy, don't trial on a day when the day before you tried so hard to achieve that you are knackered today. sleep well... and mind control- positive mental attitude has got to be 20% of the battle, 10% is diet, 70% the bodies trained ability. 100% is a heart attack but i do believe anybodies best is only the 80% of the 100 they think it is. I mean 100 metres in 10 seconds once achieved means it's possible to try one more time a bit better- okay 8 seconds is impossible isn't it? but 9 has been done! So...
get weighted up eh best of luck

Hit the sprints and plyometrics hard and stretch, stretch, stretch. If you're going to use weights for running, a weighted vest is the best choice as not to endanger the knees. I don't know what type of athletics club you are trying out for, but you'll probably want to work on your endurance too....repeated short bursts of speed need a base of conditioning to work from. PM Gatormade for a lifting/training schedule that can help with this. I don't know how much progress you can make in two weeks, but be careful not to overdo it. Give yourself at least two days of rest with light jogging and stretching before the tryouts so you'll be fresh and won't have "dead legs."
