I just recently picked u the book " Core Performance " by Mark Verstegen and I am almost 200 pages through since yesterday. Wow, is all I can say. I have had such the wrong ideas about weight lifting and the likes. I rely on weight training to train all of my muscles, up until about yesterday when I first used a physioball and discovered I had about the worst hip flexer/inner legs/core balance/strength ever. I didn't even realize you had these muscles.. Wow big mistake. The only balance I ever get to incorporate into my workouts is the dumbell incline and bench press, so my shoulders are alright but, wow, for any of you weightlifters out there who are interested in keeping good health, adding lean muscle, and getting stronger, while building attributes that will not only help you succeed in sport, but life, check out this book. As I said, I'm only about half way in and I'm totally amazed. All these months of weight training has made me lose quite a bit of my flexibility, and for my first try doing some of these things on a physioball I'd say my core balance/strength is pretty bad too. I guess I just supposed that everything I was doing with lifting ( chest / tri / back / biceps / legs / abs ) would use these muscles, but I failed to realize there are small muscles so small you just cannot fully utilize them with weights. I'd recommend this book to you all, it seems like a smart choice for a healthier life.

i see people at my gym training from time to time using that style approach, it looks like a good full body workout. i might just have to go and find that book. i am surprised that weight training has made you loose flexibility though. most people seem to become more flexible from lifting and proper stretching.

Porphyria,
I just started that program this week. Here is a copy of my training log after the first day:
I purchased a book called Core Performance by Mark Verstegen. I felt it was time for me to stop lifting heavy weights and do a program more targeted towards my active lifestyle. From reading the book, it sounds like this program may do the trick. I guess I will see after 12 weeks. Anyway, the program does not consist of a ton of weigtlifting, more balance and all that jazz. Please dont look at my logs and laugh at me and call me a wimp =).
12 minute cardio at 70 percent of my max heart rate.
Followed that up with a stretching routine.
Hip crossover 1x8
calf stretch 1x8
Hand walk 1x4
Forward lunge/forearm to instep 1x4
Backward lunge with a twist 1x4
Lateral lunge 1x4
Sumo squat to stand 1x8
I am absolutely appaled at my lack of mobility. All these years I been stretching half assed. Now I realize what I been doing wrong and I hope to rectify it and become a little more limber.
This is an awesome program, and it really breaks up the monotany of just lifting weights.
