I am so confused on my daily calorie intake. My goal is to lose 50 lbs. I go to the gym 4 days a week doing weights and cardo. I did the Nutrition Program and it said not to exceed 2504 calories. That seems like alot to me. I recently had to do a chart for my doctor on what I ate for the week, and he told me I'm not eating enough to lose weight. He wants me to get up to 1600 calories. I have an underactive thyroid which I take medication for and I know it throws a monkey wrench into my weight lose plan. I don't understand how can I be eating too little to lose weight, I'm not trying to starve myself, just not hungery. Any ideas on a good healthy diet plan to follow?

Hey MsBwell. If you eat too few calories your body goes into starvation mode and tries to hold on to all that fat, that's probably why your doct suggested the 1600 calories a day. 1600 calories is easy to do as long as you eat 4-5 times a day. That's about 350-400 calories per meal. Try to keep a food diary to see how you're doing.

Eating is exactly what you need to do to lose weight. Actually, the more you eat, the more your metabolism works. Now we are talking quality food here. As Lumina said, your body will percieve itself as being starved, and will struggle to hold on to fat if you don't eat, and will lose muscle instead. thus you will lose weight eventually, but the wrong weight, and when you do start eating again, and you will have to, your fat to muscle ratio will be even more out of whack, and your body will strive to hold on to even more. Think of the analogy of an elk and a bear if you will, the elk is lean, muscular, and grazes all day long. The bear on the other hand eats a couple huge meals, and he is big and fat and slow. The scenario here is to divide your calories up into 5-7 small meals per day. this keeps your metabolism revving. Now a meal does not have to be meat and potatoes and veggies. It can consist of an apple and a can of tuna. I hope this helps, hope I wasn't too long winded.

Thanks for the info, it makes more sense now. I reached my first goal of drinking more water so I guess now I'll work on eating the 5 small meals. I think that will be my hardest goal. Drinking water and exercising are easy, but I've lost my interest in food.

I am on a 1500 calorie diet and I am having trouble planning the meals and snacks. The doctor wants me to eat 6 times a day. I am having trouble calculating everything. Can someone help plan a menu and help me calculate the 1500 calories. Please email at Wolfangel01@aol.com

It's really easiest if you plan it all the night, or even a few days, before. Have everything in the fridge that you need. Cook chicken in advance for the a few days, measure everything into portions and store it in the fridge. When everything is planned out, it's much easier. I always had problems eating enough, and it's still hard for me to deal with the sheer volume of food I have to eat. I think of it now as a quota of fuel that I need to consume. Plan in advance for good protein, slow carbs and a little healthy fat with each meal. Good luck.

A good rule of thumb on calories to start with is anywhere from 12-18 calories per pound of bodyweight. Pick a number, around 15 may be good for starters. Stay on it for a couple weeks. Then you will have a guage to either increase or decrease from.

RachaelY et al.,
I recently found a software program for Palm Pilots (also a Windows version)that allows you to input your current weight, select a goal (increase/decrease/remain the same), and then it calculates your caloric needs for the day. It estimates your BMR, keeps track of calories eaten, and you input what exercises you've done so it can calculate calories expended. It keeps a running tally through the day, and it also shows what you the caloric goal is.

There is a demo version (quiet limited as you can only input one exercise per day) on www.palm.com, www.keyoe.com, and www.handago.com. The name of the program is Diet & Exercise Assistant, and it costs $19.95 to download.

I jst started using it recently and think its great. I hit the gym in the mornings, and then depending on how well the diet has been, i can see how I need to balance dinner calories, and possibly more exercise.

bb1fit- you say that your should "start with...12-18 cals per lbs of bodyweight," does you muscle % and fat % of your weight play a role in this or is it the same regardless of how your bodyweight is broken down?

well i dont know about other people but, when ever you dont eat meat you gain more.why?because when you dont eat meat your body starts to eat your muscle, but in order for that, you're muscle has to become fat.so when you dont eat meat you become weak and become fat.also why not wake up at 5:00 am and do some yoga?it is easy and it is relaxing. i have just started so i am not surehow this works, but you all seem like you have serious problems.yoga can make you more flexible and more slim if you look to chubby and just wanna look flexible and slim wake up in the morning at five o' clock and do yoga.after words go for a 2 mile walk and maybe that will work after a few weeks.i do that and i lost 10 pounds.so why dont you trey?

No, not everyone gains weight if they don't eat meat. There are plenty of us that do not eat meet and are still successful in losing fat and gaining muscle. I do not eat beef, pork turkey or chicken and I've lost 40lbs in 2 years by proper eating habits (that do not include meat-only fish on occasion), weight training and cardio. I've also gained quite a bit of lean body mass (muscle) over the past year.

I think the calorie counter on this site has a problem. Another program recommended that I eat about 1850 calories per day to lose 2 pounds per week. I've been doing that religiously for 3 weeks but have lost no weight. I'm pretty comfortable at this calorie level and I don't feel hungry all the time. I am considering dropping that a little. The calorie counter here said I should eat about 3500 calories per day!!! I'm pretty sure that adding 800 calories per day to my diet will not make me lose more. I eat very healthy food, btw..whole wheat, lean protein, etc. Oh--and I have a thyroid condition that I'm taking medicine for, which may partly account for not even losing on 1800 calories per day. I'm 6'1" and 265 pounds:surprised:
