Anyone have any suggestions for doing chin ups. I cant seem to do them. I have no partner and there is no one in the gym usually when I am there (too early). Our bar is on a overhead beam and is like 8 ft. of the ground so I take a chair and try them. I usually end up dropping and almost tearing my arms out of their sockets!

ya those are pretty hard...I can barely do 10 in a row. There's these guys at our gum who tie over 45 lbs and do them just fine. I think it takes a lot of practice and patience. Consider keeping your arms extended far away from each other beyond shoulder's width..and breath out as you chin up and breath in as you lower yourself easily...if a chair isn't avoiding u from dropping off have a spotter to help u out...my track couch used to help me finish off those last chalanging reps...spotting can help a lot.

billk, I weigh 220 and I can't do one chin up...thanks guys. I think I will try again keeping the chair in case I need it and will try to lift myself instead of staying high and lowering first (not enough strength to hold on the way down yet!).

When i first started i couldn't do them either(weighing over 200 lbs doesn't seem to help), but i just kept trying. At first i couldn't do one at all, but i would do 4 sets of halfs, as many as i could. After two or three weeks i could do about three. And then i got to where i could eight but no more. I had a trainer tell me to put a dumbell between my feet to increase the resistance, when i did that in about two weeks i was doind 10 reps for 4 sets.
Just keep trying.

If you’re having too much trouble doing chins at this time just forget about them for a couple of months and concentrate on building more upper body strength. Don't stress yourself out over chins it just not worth the frustration. If you can't do them it is OK because apparently you’re not ready for them yet.

Ask me how tough it is . I could not do them either. So i gave more concentration on my shoulder and arm strength.I also had to shed of some weight(try to shed off those extra useless fat cells). Now i can do 4 sets of 5-6 reps.
