I just read that to lose fat you need a caloric deficit for the day. I also just read that to gain muscle you need a caloric surplus for the day. I would like to both and was wondering if this were possible. I alternate between cardio one day, and weight training the next day. Am I defeating myself here? Thanks in advance.

P.S. Is it okay to exercise 7 days/week? I skip a day if I'm still too sore from the day before, otherwise I don't.

Could you please expand upon "the timing of your calorie deficit". Do you mean per day? As in, on a weight training day I should have a calorie surplus, but on a cardio day I should eat less to ensure a deficit?

I filled out a profile but I guess it doesn't display correctly...any ideas?

I'm a 23 year old male. I'm 6'3" and weigh 205 lbs. I think my body type is an ectomorph because I'm pretty slender with long limbs. I got a little bit of gut over my lower abs that I would love to get rid of and I want bigger arms/shoulders/chest for that nice V shaped torso. I was a smoker for 6 years, but I quit back in June. I also graduated from college in June and am struggling to find a job, I live at home and that's why I have time to work out 7 days/week. I've also been a guitarist for nearly 4 years.
