I've been workin out for sometime, problem is I hate squats. I work out alone and my kness are getting banged up. In my home gym I have a leg extension/leg curl machine. I can still get good gains from this right? I would also do stiff leged deadlifts as well.
I just hate throwin up that much weight by myself.
Any advice would be appreciated. I realize squats r the 'real" way to put on leg mass but there has to be other ways as well.
thanks

my advice is simple: learn how to squat properly and work on your flexibility. Most people think that the squat is a quad exercise, but its not. It requires a fair level of flexibilty in the hams, glutes and lower back. If these muscles are strong and flexible, then the knees will be protected from shearing forces, as they will not move over the line of the toes.

Mongrel is absolutely correct. Why do you hate squats? Is it that your knees hurt, or is it form? Even if you don't want to go heavy, do lighter weight squats. Also, I don't do hams and quads together. I do hams with lower back. Stiff leg deadlifts are an awesome hamstring exercise if done properly. I feel these more than any other ham exercise. Lunges, with dumbbells or the barbell, are also effective for the quads. Try "sissy" squats as well. These can be effective as well.

ttam,

squats are by far the #1 way to make your thighs grow. Perhaps you can wrap your knees if they are acting up? However, if you cannot do squats without pain, then you can do leg presses - they are also very effective. Be sure to brings your knees right down into your chest. Leg extensions are also good - but not for attaining sie.

I cant do them because i have snowboarded for 10.5 years. it sucks. i need to work them with other machines. People say that it separates the men from the boys, but i want to see someone compete in pipe for 10 years and then hit squats without surgury. its all good thought.-snow

Sounds like you work out at home so options may be limited (i.e. hack squats, leg presses, etc.). Have you tried doing lunges? They offer a good upper quad workout and don't require the heavy weight, but be careful. They are hard on the knees. The other option is to do less weight more reps on your squats and buy some knee wraps.
