Typically, when you join a gym they'll offer a free training session - you can use it to get some advice on your form. Also, typically, its a sales pitch for training services which range from $50 to $100 per session - hmm I wonder why FT is so popular.
For beginners, it important to get information on correct use of machines and equipment. If you've got the bucks, its great to work with a trainer - motivation and advice.
I've never seen a gym that "requires" a trainer - and I go to gyms all around the US.

I joined Bally's a month ago. I Wanted to do my own routine, and not look silly running around looking lost. So i made myself a folder with the the workout routines given on this web page, and photos of how to do the exercises. The trainers saw me using it tried to critcize of how it wasn't a good workout and how I should really get a trainer. But now a month later im still doing good on my own It just took some getting used to all the new equipment.

if your routine is workin for u then u should stick to it. ive been doin the same routine for about 2 months now, changing a thing or 2 here and there, but it works so i stuck to it. i would go see the instructor and see what he has to say and maybe apply some of his stuff to your work out. it never hurts to be open to new things. best of luck!!
