I have been told that it is not healthy to eat fruits at night or before bedtime. And I shouldn't do it if im trying to lose weight. Is there any truth to that?

Well, when calories are at a premium, and fat loss is your major goal, you need to use your calories wisely. If you can fit fruit into your calorie scheme, some is not bad. But normally in this one instance(max fat loss with already low calories), fruits are a "wasted" calorie intake, as they do not help in any way promote fat loss. As a normal part of a sound healthy diet, of course fruits are welcome, but as mentioned above, there are times when they are prohibitive. And especially before bed.

the reasoning behind it is that, more or less, the energy from carb intake close to bedtime will typically not be used, and hence stored as fat. its more beneficial to take in protein, particularly a casein based protein, as it will provide slow burning, muscle building nutrients as you sleep.

I didn't really think that eating fruits at night would afeect my weight loss. I have been on a healthy balanced diet for 5 days and im working out. Im just worried because im not good at calorie counting. I don't know how much calories the food I eat has.

That is a major problem. Most folks who are trying to diet without doing this underestimate their caloric intake by as much as 50%. A healthy balanced diet as you call it for 5 days cannot tell you nuch of anything other than if you have been calorie counting and now you average them out. Then you will have an idea of where your calorie needs should be depending on how you reacted.

As tedious as it is, you've got to count calories. I write down everything I eat, and the calorie, fat, carb, and protein content. Then every day I total them up so I know how I'm doing. If you don't know the nutritional content of something, look it up at usda.com or bodybuilder.com. If you don't have a lot of access to a computer, they sell books that tell you the same info. Try 'The complete Book of Food Counts, 6th edition' by Corinne T. Netzer. And buy a portion scale. I don't know what I'd do without mine.

One of my favorite sites for calorie and nutrient amounts is calorieking.com

On the contrary, it depends on the type of fruit. More fibrous ones are best. Some are in fact pretty calorie dense. Bananas for instance are a great bulking food. Adding them to your protein shake for extra calories is done all the time.

Fruit with an excellent Thermogenic/Carbohydrate Ratio include: Apples, Blueberries, Grapefruit, Peaches, Strawberries vs. Inferior Thermogenic Effect Fruits: Bananas, Dried Fruit, Raisins, etc., Watermelon
