We bought one and it looks to me like it would be really easy to hurt yourself with it. I mean it is really hard. I'm using it on limbs but I'm nervous about getting that thing near my back. Did it for a minute or so and it was painful. Any thoughts?

Love it.. love it for the back, legs, glutes, IT band.. LOVE. IT.

Holy Crap. I can't sue 'em if I hurt myself? I'll have to start slowly. I tried the "Thoracic Spine Mobility" movement and though I broke my back. Does it soften up any?

Depends what kind of roller you have.. I have one that is fairly solid.. not quite sure what it's made of... the less expensive ones are softer, that same kinda foam used in water toys for kids, I think. they are okay, but the softer they get, the less effective they become.

i'll keep trying. It took me 6 months to get up to 20 reps on the ab roller years ago.

It's a great tool... I usually roll around on the thing for about six to ten minutes..

I'm also fairly new to this foam rolling idea. Its pretty funny to watch people roll themselves on it :P
I found it to be very painful at first (especially in the areas that are tight) but have noticed less pain the more I use it - even as I'm putting more pressure on it.
I had some IT band issues last year and it really helped so I'm hoping that by doing this regularly I'll avoid it again this season.

Ioris, you'd have had a great laugh watching two geezers try to do it for the first time without shrieking. It was painful. I'm kind of wimpy.

I had a gal in my class a few weeks ago try it for the first time... well, holy crap did I hear about how painful it was... which only leads me to believe she needed it. She proclaimed "I'm never using this again cause it hurts!!" I kept trying to tell her repeated use would make it better... well, I;m guessing I'd have better luck selling dirt to a farmer than trying to get her to use one again... her loss.

I'm a farmer. I may be wimpy but I'll keep working through the tears. I don't quit.. You're cute when you're the hard trainer.
Seriously though. Is body weight a factor on using this thing on the torso? I'm top heavy and I seriously though I was hurting my back when I lay on the thing and moved up and down. I can unweight myself when I use it on limbs but the back thing really did hurt.

That question may be beyond my experience with the roller... is there a way you can reduce the pressure on your back? Moving your legs into a different position perhaps? Higher, lower?

I used my legs to move up and down but I can't reach the ground with my arms. I'm not sure I'm supposed to. I'll keep experimenting. My hamstrings seem to be the tightest muscle group in my body and the least responsive to stretching. I think I can use it that way. I may just be incapable of being limber in certain directions.
I'm also battling shoulder pain so my arms may or may not help in certain positions. Between me and the orthopoedist we've mostly ruled out rotator cuff but something's going on. He says it could be bursitis or arthritis. Either way he told me to work it. I do and I use ice and heat. Certain positions just hurt. I am able to do every weight lifting movement in my workouts pretty much pain free. It hurts after bench press day and icing relieves it. I've quit pain medication because nothing works from narcotics to Ibuporopen. Meloxicam seems to keep it at bay. I'm really hoping that getting back to a couple of hours a day swimming will help.
It sucks getting old because healing happens so slowly. Anyhoo, I'll keep trying to ride the bad roller. Thanks for the instruction link and the advice.

Yep.... pain sucks.. recovery takes forever it seems... yuck. There's likely some good youtube links for the roller, too... I'll see if I can find some for ya..
