I just recently started using a dumbbell as weight when doing crunchs, im just wondering is it ok if i hold up the dumbbell a little or do i have to place it right on my chest?

holding it up Partially is good. Eventually you can use a bbell.

I just grab a 45 pound plate and hold it in forearms and palms facing up above my chest and go with 3 sets of 15.

It's best to hold the dumbbells or plate behind your head, to allow your abdominals do the work.
