Hi, there,
I'm fairly new to the freetrainers forums, but I have a theory about the foodstuffs that you eat, at which parts of the day, relative to the physical exercise that you perform.
Cutting this right down to basics, there are three main food categories, carbs, proteins and the other ones (can't remember what they're called, but they're pretty simple).
Carbs are for the energy required, proteins are for the building and repair work, and the other one (can't remember either, but, funnily enough, they don't figure highly in my theory.
My theory goes like this, and it is based on someone who wants to eat healthily, maintain a level of fitness, and possibly shed a few pounds in the process. You should eat a breakfast of carb based foods, to set you up for the day, a mix of carbs and the other one for lunch, to keep you going, and mainly proteins and the other one for the evening meal, to rebuild for the next day. Carbs are energy foods, and you don't really need high carb foods to sleep, and if you do, they'll just be stored as fat come morning. Proteins are the building blocks of life, and as far as I can remember, the other one is just padding.
Here I need some guidance for the rest of the theory. If you were to throw in a workout, what should you eat before and after, and when is the most beneficial time to perform your workout?
I hope most of this makes sense, and I'm looking forward to hearing other theories!
Cheers,
Ed

before a workout eat a complex carb that will break down slowly over your workout (ie brown rice, oatmeal, whole wheat bread, etc.) after a workout get fast digesting proteins and simple carbs first (ie liquid is best, gatorade and a protein shake), then about 30 - 45 mins later you want to get some food in.. some lean meat and a simple carb (ie white rice, chicken, and a salad)
you want to divide your protein intake up evenly over the day too.. and healthy fats are a must to stimulate hormone activity

Fats, of course, no wonder i had forgotten them - been trying zen workouts as well - think of losing weight hard enough, and you just might!
Is it worth avoiding as much fat as possible to try and use up some of my stored fat? I have plenty!
And what time of day is best for a workout - at the moment I only seem to have time after my daughter goes to bed, which means I don't workout until about 8 o'clock in the evening, and I'm sure this is not ideal.
Thanks
Ed
