when I do lat raises I get this sort of "crunching" feeling in my shoulders. This does not feel good. I have dropped the weights down a bit but it still happens- if I go much lower on the weights it feels like I am not doing anything!
Am I hurting myself? Are there alternative shoulder exercises? Should I just stick with the low weights (or go lower) until it improves, or grin and bear it? Thanks.

Hey Kitten,

the key is to listen to your body.. if there is pain.. then that is a strong sign to back away. To work your side deltoids unfortunatley the majority of the exercises are lateral movements.

Have you tried changing the angle of your elbow? Try straigtening it out more or bring it in.. see if this makes a difference.

Good Luck.

It's hard to figure based on what you're saying. Is it just with that one exercise and how are you doing them? I first thought it might just be you getting used to your workout till I read your profile. Do you take any rest days? A couple of things that help some people are getting plenty of water before and during your workouts. Glucosamine chondroitan helps some but at your age I don't know if it would or not.

Hey Kitten, Shoulders can be tricky. Have you ever injuried them before? Do you get the same crunchy feeling with no weights? is there sound as well or just a feeling. You can try doing them very slow and not so high stop the raise just before the crunch feeling starts try this for a while and gradually increase raise or weight but not both at same time. Good luck

Kitten,

I have and still do have the same problem in one of my shoulders

BUT, unfortunately, i have no idea what it is. It is painless, so i never asked my doctor about it. I did previously injure my shoulder; about 9 years ago I broke my clavicle in a few places, but i doubt that it is the source of my "crunching"

I get clicking and rattling in a lot of my joints. My shoulders tend to "squelch" (best description atempt lol) when i'm doing anytihng above shoulder height.

As long as there is no pain which there isn't, I generally just keep aware of it and get on with things. Only problem i do have is a locking elbow which i just have to manipulate the position of a little.

The joys of roller hockey lol

I have a popping in my shoulders when I rotate them. I am double jointed and it feels weird although does not hurt. If it hurts when it is "crunching" you may want to see a doctor-----just to be on the safe side.

sounds like you have poor shoulder stability. A physio should be able to determine which are the weakened muscles, which are most likely be the external rotators, serratus, trapezius and rhomboid muscles.
I would make sure that you address the problem, otherwise the imbalance will get worse if you continue to lift weights, which compounds the chances of a serious shoulder injury.
