I have been doing about 45 - 60 minutes of cardio 5 - 6 days a week and eating the same as before. I am not seeing any significant results, I have actually gained weight. Am I doing too much cardio? I've heard that doing too much actually eats away the muscle. I generally go to the gym at 5:30 am, do anywhere between 30 - 45 minutes of cardio and then go back at lunch time to finish the cardio and weight train. My personall fitness program on this site suggests only doing 3 days a week at 30 - 45 minutes of cardio, that just doesn't seem enough to me.

Depends what you want to get out of it? Sounds like you are only maintaining a certain level of fitness. As far as losing muscle, it depends on the muscle that are not used. The muscles you use will stay strong, the ones you dont use will not. Its like anything else, you have to keep increasing the intensity level to reach new levels of fitness.

It all seems like such a balancing act with eating a certain way, taking in a certain amount of calories, lifting, cardio and so forth. For instance, I have absolutely no idea the number of calories I should be eating on a daily basis...I read 1600..then I read 2000...ugh

18 down to 14; this will take time and commitment. Just be consistant and set small goals 4-6 weeks out and you will get there. Always try to eat good foods and lots of plain vegies. Carbs-you need about 250-300g's a day, but make sure they are only good carbs, not plain sugar carbs.
With the cardio that you do-I would say you need at least 2000 cals a day.

Is doing an hour a day, 5 days a week too much cardio though? I try and break it up so in the am I might be doing sprints and then pm doing an additional 30 minutes of steady keep my heart rate at about 70%.
