I do cardio before my workout for 30-45 minutes a few times a week. I almost always run on cyclic machines because it is easy on my joints. Would my cardio be more effective if I switched it up to different things every once in a while?

definitely. Try low intensity/high intensity training. Like running 1.6km, then running 4 x 100m full speed, then running another 1.6km ect. This might be hard to do on the cyclic machines tho...

You can't compare the cycle to "different things." I don't know what things you're talking about, but if you mean other exercises the answer's yes. If you do a cardio work out that involves your upper-body as well, then you'll burn a few more calories. If you really want to have an affective cardio session do it in the morning on an empty stomach, and wait at least one hour after your run, cycle, or jumping rope to eat. Your body will search for undigested food and areas of stored "preserves"(body fat) since you haven't given it any breakfast to work off. This way you're working off what's on your body and not what's currently in your stomach. Best of Wishes.
