I have severe patellofemural syndrome (aka runner's knees). I love the results I get from lunges and reverse lunges but have been told by my doc and several physical therapists that any lunges, leg extension, and leg curls are out of the picture for me due to the way my knee caps glide to the sides. If I don't lay off then I could be talking about knee replacement in a few years. I am 26 so I would liek to avoid this!
I went to PT for a few weeks and they gave me a few exercises to do with an exercise ball but they just aren't cutting it. I am able to do wall squats with a ball but other than that I can't get any intensity in the exercises I am doing for my legs and glutes. I should also add that I live far away from any gym so I have to workout at home...I have free weights, a nice weight bench and weights, a treadmill (which is hard on my knees), an exercise bike ( love it!), exercise ball, and resistence bands. Unfotuantely, no leg press machine :(
Does anyone have an ideas of what I can do to help strengthen my legs and glutes further. I was getting great results using only my body weight and lots of reps with lunges and reverse lunges but, like I siad, those are out due to the grinding and pain they cause me. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!!

well if you can't do leg extensions, lunges, leg curls I take it squats are out of question.
Try deadlifts.......it does work your legs......and back but it will at least keep them strong.
I don't know what to tell you......stay off the tredmill for one. two, either do it and suck it up.......or don't.
I've had tedonitis in my knees for a few years........if you warm up properly, maybe take some glucosomin(sp) maybe you can work threw it.
Or talk to a knee replacement specialist......if its as bad as you say it is.
