I am getting discourged. I've been suffering from shin splints for several months now while using the treadmill. My thighs also burn after about 2 minutes of cardio{bike}. Both of these aliments adversly affect the length of time I do cardio. My legs are killing me. I'm not a whimp, but dang, it hurt's! I've tried to cover all the bases, good shoes, stretching, take glucosamin, calcium, and a multi vitamin. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Stop using the treadmill, continuing on will just make things worse. Go to www.runnersworld.com, they have some good injury articles there. You could try walking instead if that doesn't hurt and maybe just try to increase your bike time a little each week until you can go as long as you'd like.

Stay off the treadmill for sure.!!
Try building more muscle in the legs. Sounds like you tried to hard. Like lumina said...try walking for now, and add incline, that will still get your hr up.
Hope you feel better soon. Good Luck.

Hi mytrn, stay off the tred mill untill your shin splints have healed. When you start back start flat dont raise them at all for the first while and start with short periods of time, and most importantly walk on the ball of your foot not the heel, this alone will cause shin splints. As for the stationary bike check the seat hight, make sure your leg is almost streight when the peddal is at the lowest point you should have only a slight bend in your knee at this point. And dont try to much resistance gradualy increase it.

mytrn...I feel your pain! I suffer from shin spints and pain in my quads. I never use to get shin spints tell I ran on the Treadmill, but I took a good break away from the treadmill and am slowly getting back into it by doing intervals, so far it seems to be going good. Also try strengthening your shins by doing towel scrunches. As for pain in my quads, I never use to get this until I started biking this summer, I 've tooken off lots of time, strength trained my legs, adjusted the seat differently, but continue to get the same "discomfort/pain" when I bike. Can anyone help me with this???

I used to get shin splints all the time. This may be caused by the arch in your feet like me. It could have to do with your running shoes. Try seeing a doctor. I used to get shin splints after 10 minutes of running on the treadmill so I stopped running excessively on it and switched to the bike or elliptical trainer. I also found that I achieved better results by doing this. I was doing nothing but putting stress on the body by running through the pain. Good Luck !!
