It depends on your goals. Bulking is a method that lots of bodybuilders use to literally gain bodyweight. You of course gain alot of strength with the added bodyweight, which consists of eating tons of food. So your weight gain is some muscle, lots of fat usually. With more strength, of course heavier lifts ensue, so the theory is more muscle is gained. However, if and when you go to dieting for a reason, whether contest or just because you can't take off your shirt anymore, you may find that most if maybe all will be fat and you will end up when done about the same with an extremely hard diet. I prefer to stay leaner, gain lean mass, and when I diet, it is only 6 weeks as compared to 16 weeks or more, and keep the lean gains I made. An option I use is do a 4-6 week "bulking" program, eating good of course, but a bit more calories than normal, like adding cream to your protein shakes1 Great boost in calories, and a fav of some past greats like Zane and Scott. Then, go on a "leaning" cycle for say 2 weeks, a semi diet, taking out the stuff like cream and any junk, and get things back in check. This serves the purpose of never letting things get so out of hand that you have to do that 16 week diet. Our goal is increases in muscular weight, so we know we must eat and train. The obstacle is HOW to eat, and how to train. Once you get these facets of your plan straight(for you), you will see results. The choice in plans is yours.
-------------- Failing to plan is like planning to fail!
