I don't wear one anymore, cause I found out my core wasn't as strong as I thought it was. So now I have one but I just keep in my closet. Unless your powerlifting going for a new max or somthing, let your abbs and lower back do the work.

I never wore a belt even on my 1 rep maxes.....all belt does is compensate for core weaknesses....
technically you can wear a belt on 1 rep maxes if it helps to ease your mind...don't do it on lighter sets

I've heard that belts give you a false sence of security. Am I wrong?

wear a belt on your last attempt at the squat at the biggest powerlifting meet of the year.
i guess you could say to train with one, but only before a meet to get used to it. learn to push your abs against the belt. If you dont do powerlifting competitions and are lifting to get stronger for a sport, dont use one.
The most important muscles in sports (other than the heart) are your core stabilizer muscles. Your abs, lower back, obliques, external rotators, and hip flexors. They are your basis for power. Using a belt would be to avoid training these muscles.
-------------- Only a man who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach down to the bottom of his soul and come up with the extra ounce of power it takes to win when the match is even.
