Barbell grip for curls - just wondering

This site says that for both underhand and overhand curls, it is best to keep the thumb on the same side of the bar as your fingers, rather than fully grasping the bar. Why is the common technique not as good?

when you lift with your thumb on the same side as your fingers it isolates the main muscle group more and does not use your forarms as much.
