I had my L5 and S1 disc's taken out 4 years ago when I was 20, I have some minor nerve damage in my left leg. Has anyone had this done and if you have what kind out workout program did you use to get into shape?

why ask people who have no real clue...ask your doctor or neurologist? ask him/her the type of activities you can or can't do? how heavy can you lift?etc....these are the things we have to know....even if some1 went through similar experience...their body is very different from yours....so you won't be able to take what they did and do the same thing...or else you may risk injuring yourself...

I have not had back surgery and do not have any nerve damage. I have a herniated disk (L4/L5) and a deformed hip joint along with some slight scoliosis. I've been dealing with this for almost 15 years and have had consultations with neurologists, ortho specialists, chiropractors and lots of physical therapy, including using the McKenzie exercises. I've learned everyone is different and the main thing is to learn to listen to your body when starting a new workout program. I can't do standard McKenzie exercises and I can't do standard Pilates. With all the years of working out my core strength is amazingly weak. To keep this short I'll just share that I spent hours (days?) looking for help - from a trainer or personalized program created by a professional who specializes in lower back rehab. The *only* thing I have found so far is Stott Pilates Back Care Series. Each workout is a progression to the next level. These along with squats using a fitness ball between my back and the wall and walking for cardio have been a great start for me. You may not need such modification and may be able to jump right in to a regular Pilates class with cardio added in. From the little I know of your condition that is where I would suggest you think about starting. At least it gives you some ideas. I'll end this message reiterating the point I made earlier - whatever you start off with, listen to your body. If it hurts or causes discomfort, back off until you are more familiar with what will cause pain or flare-ups and what won't. The gentleman who made the first reply had a good point about checking with your doctor. See what he/she suggests - just keep in mind they are paid consultants. They aren't know-all, see-all gods. Educate yourself and make your own decisions. Good luck in your fitness journey!
