I am 63 & about 40 lbs. overweight. I joined a fabulous new 80,000 sq. ft. health club last month & with sheer determination have decided to go every day in March. I do the bicyle 20 mins., treadmill 20 at 3.0, then the weight room equipment which exercises every part of your body, then a stair stepper thing where your arms move in coordination with your body (20 mins.), the jacuzzi & steam room-a total of about 2 hours. Recent blood work show my HDL 46, LDL 125. Dr. says to increase fiber. I'm losing inches but in 11 days, lost only 3 lbs. Am taking viamins & prescribed meds, including Meridia. Need advice, please!

Congratulations Linda, You're doing all the right things. What's happening is that you're losing fat and gaining muscle as your measurements show. Muscle is heavier than the fat. That's why your scales show little weight loss. Pay attention to what your tape measure says. That's the true indicator of your progress coupled with how you feel. You're right where you wanna be. Welcome to FT and stay the course. You'll find lots of support and great info here.

Thanks, Charlie! I truly appreciate any advice you & anyone else can give me. Am I using the equipment properly? Should I be doing cardio one day, weights the next or upper body one day, lower the next? Am sticking to my diet & adding fiber, which was too low. Linda

Linda, take a look at the FT workouts. There are a few that you can choose from. They will help you split your workouts up. Yes, do cardio on non lifting days for best results. As far as using the weight machines, ask someone in your gym. Employees or members are usually glad to help. Read up in the nutrition section here all you can. The major keys to accomplish your goals are diet, exercise and proper rest in that order.

Thanks, again. Question: is the time spent on the bicycle (20 mins.), the treadmill walking at 3.0 (20 mins.) & the eliptical/cross trainer (20 mins)good for losing weight & building muscle? Should I stay longer? Since each has a flat screen t.v., I could stay there a lot longer!! I will alternate the weight machines, too. I was doing every one of the approx. 15 machines w/varying weights which work every part of your body. Someone told me yesterday no, that I should do upper one day, lower the next. Something about tearing the muscles.

20 to 40 minutes of cardio should be fine depending on intensity.

don't time your lifts. Use sets and repititions. Look at the FT workouts, maybe try the weight loss and definition option. It will tell you the number of sets and reps. It is best to split workouts so that you give each area 5 to 7 days recovery time. When you lift heavy and hard you do tear down the muscle fibers and you do need to allow for it to rebuild and repair itself.

Thank you, Charlie. Again you have come through for me. I will follow your advice. I am not lifting weights on a bar. I am using individual machines (about 15 types, ie. inner thigh, outer thigh, leg curls, chest, etc. & you can set the weight as desired. I am so motivated & this new club is top notch. I'll take the info. you gave me to the club tomorrow & ask some of the trainers for help. Thank you, again. I'll let you know how I'm doing. Linda
