was just looking for some opinions.. im thinking of splitting my workout into cardio in am, and weights in pm.. cardio will probably be at around 730am. what should i eat before cardio to not compromise muscle loss? it will be high intensity, typically a 5 min warmup with anywhere between a 15-30 min workout, and a 5 min cooldown..

would something like a protein shake 30-60 min before my workout suffice? I know the protein without carbs will minimize the insulin response and allow a mobilization of fat while providing amino acids to prevent muscle breakdown

I still don't know all the scientific terms so I'm sure an expert will jump in here.

From reading here on FT - I saw a few weeks ago that cardio in AM on an empty stomach is especially good for burning fat. The way I understood it was that it left your body with little choice than burn fat/muscle. A PRE-workout shake would seem to counter this, in my understanding. If loss of fat is not your goal, I don't know.

Of course, breaking cardio and lifting into completely different days is widely recommended (I'm guilty of not doing this) such that your muscle rejuvenation is focused most tactically. Personally, I like feeling completely exhausted walking out of the gym and sometimes I have lifting a muscle group to exhaustion but still don't have that feeling and the only way I have been able to find to get that feeling is killing myself on the treadmill. I know that it's counter to my lifting goals, but it's a conscious decision.

I also read that if you "must" do cardio on the same day, cardio in the am and lifting in the evening is the way to go.

With all that said, one of the most fit people at my gym does 45 mins of cardio at the end of every one of his lifting workouts 4 times a week. So, I guess we need to find what works for us.
