I always hear people talking about strain on the lower back when doing abdominal exercises. Does this mean that doing abs crunches etc will slightly strengthen the back? Or is it the wrong movement and can only injure it?

Ab exercises can strengthen lower back also.....
People at times strain lower back by doing ab exercises incorrectly...
crunches are a great exercise to strengthen abs
to strengthen lower back...do hyperextensions, deadlifts, romanian deadlifts, stiff legged deadlifts, good mornings....
