Hello I have a question for the experts out there in regards to an abs excercise I do. I through the years have worked hard on my abs and feel pound for pound I have fairly strong abs, I make sure to use great variety in my workouts as well.

My question though is more a question of safety. In the excercise in question I use a steep incline bench and do sit ups while holding a 30 pound dumbell behind my head. I make sure I use good form, no slouching, I support the weight completely with my arms etc. I do 3 sets of 10-15 (I usually max out before i hit rep 15 on sets 3 and sometimes 2.)

What im apprehensive about is it feels very strenuous on the Abs which might be a good thing. But I have never seen, heard or read about anyone using this technique and im wondering if its because of injury possibilities. Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I know of plenty of people who use this exercise. I think you are fine to continue doing it.

I do weighted sit ups on an incline bench too, but I hold the dumbell to my chest. I once tried relaxing my abs at the bottom but it made my back hurt. It's a good exercise so long as you keep the abs tight
