a guy from the gym told me that i can't work out with moderate weights and more rep. in order to tone up untill i spend a period of lifting really heavy and gaining some mass ,i told him that i'm satisfied with my weight but he said it's doesn't matter and that if i tone up right away i'll only burn the fat but the muscle wont gain a thing
is that true ???

Well, without knowing too much about you (current weight, bodyfat %, etc.), I would have to say "that depends." If I understand what he's trying to tell you, I think he is saying that you can't tone what you don't have. If your goal is only to define your existing physique, then you will not gain muscle mass. What will happen is you will drop your bodyfat % to a point where your existing muscles will look more defined.

However, if you want a more "muscular and ripped" look, you may have to gain more mass and define them after you've accumulated a sufficient amount.

Hope this makes sense...good luck!

Well, I didn't start off by gaining mass first. My intentions were to lose weight and tone at the same time and if that is what you are trying to do, stay with a relatively high weight (something you can do between 12-20 reps but still have a hard time) and rest only about 30-60 and you should start to see results in as little as about two weeks.... anyway that is what I did and it worked out great. Robert is also right in saying that you can't tone what you don't have--- but you don't necessarily be huge if you know what I mean.

Ok it all depends on your normal strength....do you have any natural mass at all? If you do, to tone up, you need to loose some excess body fat. when you loose body fat your muscules will show up more defined then they were with no body fat....so it depends...if you already have mass muscule then try to work on loosing a few pounds and go with lighter weights and more repititions....if you feel like you need more muscule, go ahead and do about a month of strength training and then shed of a few pounds and do smaller weights/more reps....if your not muscular and you shed off a few pounds and work on toning, honestly, you will look like a stick and thats no good....
