ok i have only been working out for bout 6 months and i saw a lot of gains in size in all areas except my chest. i dont see as much as i would like (obviously). i mean, everything got a lot bigger except my chest which grew only a medial amount. my ribs stick out as much as my chest when i stand up straight. is this normal? if i turn to the side and look at myself in the mirror, i dont have a big chest. from the front i look ok. i might even be able to pass for a buff guy.

is that usually how it happens and it'll just take time or does it sound like maybe i have a more-than-usual stubborn chest?

You can work with barbells without a spotter by not trying to lift your 1-rep max. As a bodybuilder, the max you should do is no higher than 85-95% of your 1-rep max. This gives you enough of a workout and still achieve hypertrophy. If you are not sure you can even lift the weight, don't attempt it at all. I often workout at home, without a spotter, and have been able to lift 90-95% of my 1-rep max for 2-3 reps.
