Hi everyone, I am in my second week and I am watching my food intake very carefully. I am seeing myself getting slightly bigger aroung the midsection. I am a hard gainer and was told not to do any real cardio. Is this normal? I want to get bigger not fatter. Any help would be great. Ross

Welcome to ft!
First of all, what is your goal? I assume it is to gain mass (since you mentioned being a hardgainer) and not to lose weight. Do you do any weighted ab work? How are you currently monitoring your food intake? How many total calories (as well as fat, protein and carb) are recommended for you by ft?

Robert, Thanks for writting back so soon. I am 6'3'' and 187lbs. I am trying to increase my mass and my stength. Being a vegetarian makes my fat intake a lot easier that others. My calories are between 2,000 - 3,000 my protein is about 180-200 gm, my carbs I have not been keeping that close of an eye to. I have used the wgt ab machine the last week and a half. Is that good or bad? I am a physical therapy assistant in the Navy so I have a very good knowledge base. But my body is a mystery. Can you keep your waist size down and still gain mass. I seem to be some kind of Ecto and Mesomorph. my protein is suppose to be 270, my carbs 630, my fat 125 and my cal 4500. I am not anywhere near those numbers. Maybe in protein but not cal or carbs. Please help. I think there is a big man in here somewhere. It just takes the right combination. Ross

Ross, the general rule (as you probably already know) is that in order to gain mass, you have to eat more calories than you burn. It sounds like you can burn calories fairly easily (I do too, being a hardgainer like yourself). Therefore, you may actually have to be somewhere around 5,000 calories per day!
That being said, try to keep a journal of what you eat during the day. You'll have to eat 5-7 meals per day and keep your ratios (carbs, protein & fat) fairly even for those meals. Incorporate some protein shakes if you feel you are falling short.
Now, let's look at your ab workout. You work with weights so that your muscles can grow, right? Therefore, your abs are just another muscle group. Work them with weights and they'll grow! Therefore, you'll need to work your abs without weights...just your own body weight and gravity for resistance. Keep the reps. high and hit them from different angles. You can sign up for ft's ab blast program...this will work well!

Iquana, the best way to get your calories, proteins, carbs right is to experiment and keep an accurate record. It took me about a week to get my ratio right and now I don't need to keep track anymore. Good luck and Robert is right. If you use weights, you are going to gain weight so do abs with no weights and lots of reps.
