It has been about a good 4 months since I've taken some time off from training... Lately I've been tired, cranky and I think it is time to step away a bit. Can you guys shed some light onto this.... How long is too long or how long is not too long? If I take off, I probably won't hit the weights for another 13 days..... Is that too much or not....? Thanks for all your help...Also generally, how long do u guys take off after a certain program?
Thanks

I have heard to go 8 or 10 weeks then take a week off. This is what I usually do, just my 2 cents! Good Luck!

Alrighty,
Personally I don't think people should take any longer than a month off in a year. And thats not all at once, maybe 1 week every 4 months just for a break.
I suffered a bad injury and haven't been able to train for the past 6 months, it's then you realise just how important it is to you. I look and feel fat, out of shape, can't do much cardio, everything I eat makes me feel fat, I can't eat as much as I'd like, I get out of breath easy, and it's going to take some very hard work to get back how I used to be.
Unlike yourself I find that because I'm not training I am becoming tired, and cranky...It has also just started to depress me quite a bit thats why I'm starting training again 2 months earlier than I should.
Training should be fun, not a chore. If you're not enjoying it, do something about it. Rotate your routine every week. There's plenty of variables just as good as each other.
Happy resting time, and even happier training time.

Ok? What type of injury did you suffer from? You can try swimming and eating healty and you will not feel as fat. Diet is very very important. I agree you should not go more then 3 months constantly lifting without a week off.

John - those are the classic symptoms of over training. If you notice, ft's most difficult routine is the 12 week mass program. I don't know their thinking when they set it up but it's smart training to take a week off every three months or so. If nothing else, it'll give your body time to recuperate and help avoid injury later. If you read a lot of the posts on here, you'll see people say all the time that they feel guilty about taking a day or two off. That's ok for the short term but long term you need more than that.

Everyone has an opinion, but all will agree not to underestimate the power of rest! Generally, 1-2 weeks off after 8-12 weeks of training is what has been advocated, even here at ft. There is a 2-week rest period after the 12-week mass program.
