How do you add resistance when doing these?

You can hold onto db's but it makes it harder to keep your balance and get a good stretch. You can also put your block or whatever you're standing on in front of a low cable pulley and hold it behind your back while leaning forward a bit. It's still hard (at least for me) to keep your balance.

true..

when holding extra weight, do one leg at a time, this way you can use your other hand for balance.
