Hi,
I have a couple of questions regarding some leg excersises I've been assigned that I'm sure you guys can help me with, so here goes..
Firstly, I've been given a couple of different calf raise type excersises that make use of gym machines I don't have available (I train at home). Since I gather most calf excersises train the entire muscle, is it ok to substitute these as I have done, with simple standing calf raises ? All I'm doing basically is holding a loaded barbell and raising up on my calves, and then lowering down again (toes are on a 2inch high block for this). Is this ok ?
The other thing is the Straight leg deadlift: I was always taught to lift heavy objects by bending the knees and keeping the back straight and upright, but this excersise seems to contradict this. Since I've suffered from some lower back pain in the past I'm a little worried about doing this one - I have nobody to spot for me to check my form. Is there something else I can substitute for this one to do hamstrings ?
Thanks for your time guys and gals. Thats 2 weeks I've made so far, and looking forward to continuing :)
Rob.

Rob, yest you can always substitute the calf exercises. You can also do donkey calf raises if you like.
As far as the straight leg deadlift, the knees are slightly bent (contradictory to the name of the exercise). This is definitely going to affect your lower back so don't go too heavy if you feel you cannot lift the weights. You can substitute this exercise with good mornings.
On leg day, you can substitute regular deadlifts with squats (and all of its variations). The squat is probably one of the best compound exercises that target the hams, glutes, back and quads.
Good luck and continue on...

Thanks for the reply Robert.
I'm off now to checkout the leg sections in the muscle targeting section of the site again. Looks like it's gonna be extra squats then (ouch!)
