I used to do over 500 crunches a day and they never did anything for me. I read somewhere (i forget where)that they actually make your stomach seem bigger. So do they actually help you or hurt you?

Well to start I think what you mean by "help you" is reduce your stomach size. In order to reduce your stomach size, you need to create a caloric deficit through diet and exercise, and then your body will reduce the amount of fat on a certain body part. On the other hand, crunches do work; but when I say work, I mean strengthening the abdominal muscles...you will not be able to see those muscles unless you reduce your total body fat!
