Hi everyone,
I've joined this site recently, read a lot of posts, but I still really want some clarification on my exercise and diet plan. I started weight training from the fitness plan on this site last week, so today is the start of my second week. Before this I was running 1 mile 5 days a week. I also cut my caloric intake way back, which from advice from this message board, I was told is not a good idea. Well I've alwasy been confused on caloric intake vs burning....if my recommended caloric intake is 1500, which was recommended by this site, does this mean that I have to burn more then 1500 calories a day to lose weight? That seems impossible! It seems like I would have to be working out like 5 hours a day! Am I understanding this wrong? Is it more like you have to burn more calories then you consume OVER your base amount of calories, which is in my case 1500? So if I eat 2000 calories I have to burn about 600-700 to lose weight? I eat in the range of 1200-1500, but a little bit ago I was going down to about 1000 calories a day. So now that I am weight training, I am doing less cardio. I run 1 mile during my cardio days, and it is hard for me. I have asthma. I frequently have to stop and walk while I am running, even if it is only 1 mile, to catch my breath and stop wheezing. So I can only get about 10-15 minutes of cardio when I do it. I just read about HIIT....would I be able to do this with asthma? If I can barely handle a 5 minute jog before I have to stop and catch my breath, would high intensity 30 second sprints be bad for me? |

you have to remeber your body continuosly burns calories through out the day not just when your working out. i think if you reduce to 1000 calories your body will be holding onto fat.

well i just started weight training. so i do that monday wednesday and friday. tuesday and thursday i run a mile. weekends i'm usually more active so i end up walking a lot or hiking. i do all of my exercising after work, sometime in between 6 and 8pm. i am not a morning person, nothing in the world could get me to get up early so i could do morning exercising.
an average weekday diet: 9:30am: 1 egg or cottage cheese and fruit and 1 cup of coffee with rice milk, but lately i've been adding vanilla protein shake to it instead. 11:30am: salad or cottage cheese and fruit if i didn't have it already, or some veggies and hummus. string cheese 2pm: tuna sandwich, or salad, or soup and veggies 4pm: maybe some veggies if i have anything left over from my packed lunch for work. 5:30pm: after work snack...some fruit or a cereal bar preworkout: a banana and a protein shake postworkout: i need more protein powder...so for now all i have is fruit dinner (somewhere between 7 and 9pm) soy veggie patty on a slice of whole grain bread with grilled veggies or a low cal artichoke mini pizza 11pm late snack: nuts or cheese....occasionally a small cup of cereal (i get late night munchies) ============ Quoting from christal086: hows your diet and exercise routine? ============= |

why are you eating at 11pm? if you have tea around 7pm you shouldn't need a snack that late. six small meals should be plenty. how well do you sleep?

you mean like herbal non-caffeinated tea? i should get into that more often, because when i was drinking tons of tea a year ago i felt better and lost weight unintentionally because i stopped drinking soda and sweetened coffee drinks. but i still don't drink those:)
sleep is weird with me. first of all, im an artist and i get all my creative energy at night. that said, i LOVE to stay up and i HATE to get up. there are times where i could go to bed, but i don't want to and i fight being tired. that feeling for some reason helps me concentrate on my artwork, and i love it. i just enjoy the energy of the night and i think for some reason the sunlight distracts me. there are times, because of this energy i get at night (whether i work out or not), that i can't go to sleep at the time that i need to in order to get enough sleep for work in the morning. sometimes i do need to eat a little bit of something to fall alseep, but not always. most of the time i'll have a snack late because i just want to, or i'll feel hungry. i don't know why. i don't want to drink water as a substitute because then i will have to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. sometimes if i can't sleep at the time that i need to go to bed i will take an herbal relaxer called "Calms" and that usually helps. If i had a job where i could work in the afternoon like my old job where i worked from 1pm-9pm, i would stay up until 3am because i am a night person. ============ Quoting from christal086: why are you eating at 11pm? if you have tea around 7pm you shouldn't need a snack that late. six small meals should be plenty. how well do you sleep? ============= |

really? because i thought that as long as you get the same amount of sleep and eat at the same increments throughout the day, it didn't matter what your schedule was. Like a person who wakes up at 11am and eats their last meal at 11pm and goes to bed at 2am could be the same as a person who wakes up at 7am and eats their last meal at 7pm and goes to bed at 10pm. Or say your are a bartender and you get off work at 2am, so you get up for the day at around 12pm and go to bed at 4am. Are people with late night or late afternoon jobs unable to lose weight because of their sleep schedule? I'm not saying I'm one of these people but I do prefer late jobs and if I do switch my job I would go for a late one.
