Hallo :)

I'm beginning Wing Chun classes soon (if all goes to plan) and I was wondering if anyone here practices aswell?

Are there any specific muscles I should focus on? I gather triceps are important, but are any other muscles deserved of extra attention?

Hi, my son practices Wing Chun, I hope you enjoy it as much as he does.
Regarding muscles - triceps are the punching muscle, but Wing Chun is easier with less bulky muscles afaik.

Take a look here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCHgqtskaN8

Everyone Wing Chung Tonight!

Lol just had too.

Also for a punch the power comes from the hips (core)!

You can stand there and hit me in the face with your beautiful I'm looking in the mirror on the pulldowns triceps but if you don't put your core into it, it just may be the last punch your going to get!

Lol I just watch that video and just have to say it goes to show even with a Master Title they still can be WRONG!

Yes the tri's plays a roll but come play slap bitch with a guy that train to fight using his core and your tri's aren't going to help much!

A weak core is just that weak! and if you neglect the core (Posterior Chain) and do any kind of contact sport or art your asking for trouble.

I'm Grand Master Not Know Shit and I don't need any muscle or to train core all I need is back and tri's.

Well I say bullshit and try the slap bitch stuff on a boxer or grabber and see how fast you get knock the F out or Tap Out!

Not all them Art are good I personally know people that carry a 3rd or 4th degree black belt in the wrong arts and get their asses kicked real fast but then I know some that took the right stuff and even a women good at this you just better watch yourself.

My 2 favorites are Boxing and American Kempo Karate, This type of art will teach you to fight your way out of a phone booth not play slap bitch or stand 10 feet back doing an air show!

Thanks for the replies. And cheers for the link, Jon. I thought this bit was pretty funny:

So what happens to this guy when you punch like that?
- Who cares?
:)

What exercises would you recommend for hamstrings and glutes, SF? - The programme I've registered for here includes calves and lower back work, but nothing for these other two.

As far as effectiveness goes I suppose it all depends on your personal reasons for training. Pretty much all the martial arts are good in their own way against an untrained attacker, but you're absolutely right, one style against another style will usually see some strange 'scissors, stone, paper' results. That isn't to say they are inneffective, just sometimes quite specific in their areas of strength.

Me? I train aikido and iaido, both of which I've seen slated by 'experts' for their so-called street effectiveness. If I wanted to be effective at defending myself I'd by a gun or a can of mace. I train to better myself and be as good as I can be at a skillful art, interestingly the confidence you gain from knowing your own limitations seems to remove the need for 'street effectiveness' to a large extent.

For the record, you're right about core body strength. I'm pretty sure a short clip on a general show about certain aspects of all martial arts is only covering some of the elements. Before I dismissed someone with that amount of experience I'd want to get a better view, and I'd certainly show respect for their training and dedication.

Just my thoughts ;)

Quoting from jonshez:

These are my reasons for wanting to learn a martial art too. The self defence side of things is a nice bonus, and I reckon what I'll learn in these classes (I've had a couple in the past), should be enough to see off the average yob on the street.

In my experience, folk who know a thing or two about fighting don't go around starting fights. It's usually an unruly teen or a drunk throwing right hooks you can see coming a mile off!

As far as effectiveness try Run Fu, turn your self around and run like a fool!

Run Fu has been around for many many years!
