Sorry to start a new topic about this, but is swimming laps an acceptable alternative to jogging or other cardio? I love to swim and we opened up the pool, and I've been spending a lot of time swimming laps.

If I swam laps for half an hour, would I get as good of a workout as if I jogged for half an hour?

If I'm not mistaken, the 3 best physical activities in the world are (In no part. order) Soccer, Motocross, and Freestyle swimming...so...lap away laddie...jogging only swings the arms while legs do work...swimming includes the arms in stroking as well as legs.

Thanks for the advice. I knew it was pretty good excercise, I just wasn't sure if it was an appropriate alternative to other aerobic excercise.

Matt, as a prior swim team competitor, YES, it can be substituted for aerobic exercise. I swam about 3 hours per day, and lifted weights every other day. Man, was I smokin'!!! Sorry, went on a flashback there for a moment, and back to reality *sigh*. If you go into fitday.com, you can log your swimming activity to see how much you are burning per stroke, playing around, treading water, etc.
