ok, I just joined the site and started working out again. Everything was going great until it was time to work on abs. Whenever I try and work my abs, I can do so for about 30 seconds until my lower back really starts to hurt. The pain sticks around for about 10 seconds then goes away and I start the process all over again. I originally thought that this had to do with weak back muscles but now I am starting to question that. Any suggestions that you could give would be much appreciated, thank you.

It is weak back muscles, you need to work your lower back, and once that gets stronger you will notice how working your abs will get easier.

You may have disk issues and your not doing abs proper especially not protecting your lower back by maintaining a neutral spine.

You must keep your lower region of the abs locked in to protect your spine.

The above posts are correct but you didn't mention what type of ab work you're doing. Straight situps can be problematic for someone who already has an injured back. There are a lot of alternative exercises that allow more ab stability while you strengthen everything else.

the exersises I was doing were twisting crunches and leg raises. Nothing too intense. Do you have any advice for other exersises?

I'm going to go with you have disk issues and this is why it hurts.

At least I know they mess me up so I do obliquse where I don't have to twist like elbow to same side knee or hanging dumbbell to one side and side plantks.

For lower region I do knee lifts with a dumbell between legs but when I do weights crunches I feel my lower region so I back off knee lifts.

ive got almost the same problem i went to a chyropracter and they said that a nerve was being pinched between my spine or osmething like that heh, but chryos help ease the pain

I take something out of place or a swollen muscle to pinch a nerve, slipped disk, bulging or herniated disk, strained muscle, sprained muscle, torn muscle something of the likes of that they don't just pich themselves.
