I am trying to loose weight, I would like to loose 30 lbs. In the past I have been physically active, and worked out regularly, but getting through university made it hard for me to get to the gym. In the past month I have been going to the gym regularly doing both cardio and weight lifting. However, I admit that my diet is not the best. I am a very picky eatter, and by dieting, this is just restricting me from more foods; leaving me wtih little selection for food! I am very motivated to loose the weight, but how can I do this and be a picky eater at the same time?!? HELP!

Who says you have to go on a restrictive diet to loose weight? Just control the amount of calories you take in,control your portions and eat healthy foods, stay away from junk food, white bread, candy etc and you will loose weight.

Gotta agree with the such it up comment and those of bigandrew. I'm a cook and can't understand those folks who say "I don't like fish" or "I don't like venison".

If you don't like something then you have to consider that it was possibly not cared for prior to cooking or cooked right. Never say "I don't like" just realize that whatever it is has never been prepared properly for your liking.

I can't tell you how many people I've prepared something like fresh tuna or venison for that have said, "Oh my God, this is fantastic." Then you tell them what it is and they say, "But I had it before and it was aweful."

All in care, preparation and presentation. You can, and will, get over it. Believe me, when I met my wife she had been a vegetarian for 10 years, but would eat chicken and salmon...and that was it. Now she eats pheasant, duck, venison (only the prime cuts prepared with a really good reduction sauce), quail, chukkar....even slow smoked ribs (noticed ribs are not on the healthy eating diet list, darn! :).

Anyway, if you need tips on making food palatable, feel free to post a question with the food you want and I, and others, will help you make it taste fabulous. Of course, if you are talking about wheat germ, kasha and tofu, then I ain't a gonna be much help!

mysticgraces and dteufel....great advicse..thanks. Being a picky eater is difficult, simply just "sucking it up" is worthless advise, food is ment to be enjoyed. There is no point in forcing food into you, if it doesnt taste good.

Any ideas on how to make green vegetables taste good?

OK, let's try this again.

Green vegetables, such as brussels sprouts (I always cut them in 1/2), zuchini, string beans, broccoli, fiddleheads (if you can find them) etc are great sauteed. The denser the vegetable, the more you might want to blanch them first. Blanching simply means to drop them in boiling water for 5 min., then drain.
Splash some olive oil in a sautee pan over med. high heat. When the oil is HOT, add some chopped garlic (you can also add chopped shallots or leeks...whatever you like) and sautee for 2-3 min. then add the vegetables (cut up in pieces in some cases like broccoli). Sautee for 8-10 min. or so, depending on how you like them, then sprinkle with a decent amount of grated parmesan cheese (not the sawdust in the green bottle, buy a hunk of the good stuff and grate it youself. Makes all the difference in the world). Sautee for a few minutes more until the cheese is melted throughout and the veggies are done to your liking.
In the case of leafy veggies, I like to steam them first, then sautee with some butter, garlic and parmesan.
Try the brussels sprouts this way. The cheese makes them all chewy and delicious.

I meant it as a joke ..tough crowd...

but in a way it does work, I used to be very picky eater myslef. still am but not to that degree anymore...
when I started working out, I had to eat food that I didn`t like or didn`t wanna give it a try but I had to "suck it up" since it was a good choice for my goals.

but I agree it`s all in preparation and presentation.

I say suck it up...cause if you want the goals...you'll do whatever is possible. At first I hated working out...I took it as a class in highschool. I was big and weak....not good bed fellows....but I stuck with it...and it became a routine....now...I have to make myself NOT go to the gym.

Do I like bland green beans, or eating a salad when all my friends have grissy handburgers and fries? NO! Yes i'll cheat every know and then...but I don't go overboard. Hell I think whey protein and water...tastes like gritty chaulk.....but hay...if I want that 400 bench, or 55in chest....I SUCK IT UP...and drink.

Sorry I don't believe in babying and holding hands....

good luck.

Andrew, that is some tough talk from a cheerleader - just kidding. I agree with Andrew. To get to where you want to go, you will have to just do it sometimes. If you look you can find good recipes that will help the pciky eater in you but there are certain things that are going to be tough. As BA mentioned, whey and water does not taste good. When I first drank it, i thought it was coming back up. Now, after "sucking it up", it does not taste that bad at all

deteufel...Thanks for the veggie cooking tips!! I am going to give it a try. To be honest I do enjoy most types of food, except for green vegetables. I often avoid eatting several dishes just because they contain these vegetables. I think if I begin putting these vegetables in my dishes in small quantity and working my way up, mising the vegetables with other foods i do enjoy, this should help get over the problem!!!!:)

I agree...suck it up, eat like a machine. If you can make something taste good though, I'm all for it.
