Hello all. I am 22 yr male, I'm 5' 4" and 107 pounds. I would like to gain some weight and strengthen up..I would like to look defined instead of the scrawny kid I am now. I was wondering if it's possible to bulk up by soley working out at home with dumbells/freeweights? I have read up on doing low reps with more weight, and that doing lifts like the deadlift, squats, bench press ect. would be best to see results, but can I see results by doing this 3 days a week at home? Or should I go to the gym instead. Also, I'm thinking about buying a weightgainer...to add those extra calories/protein...because I know this is extremly important to getting anywhere. Any suggestions/thoughts would be great..thanks. -Justin

why does it matter where you train? if your weights are heavy enough then it's good enough....problem is that for big exercises...like squats, deadlifts, etc...you'll need a lot of resistance...at least eventually...so you'll need to invest in some equipment to continue to have results at home...
-rack...for squat, deadlifts, pull ups, bench press, etc...would be good if it had safety bars...
-olympic barbell...with weights...45s, 25s,10s, 5s, 2.5s...
-adjustable dumbells to at least 100lb
-adjustable bench...
these are the basic things you need
weight gainers are only helpful if you can't eat enough calories in a day for whatever reason...weight gainers are generally piece of crap calories....drenched in sugar and processed crap....if you could instead eat something else...that would be better...

Only three reasons to go to a gym instead of working out at home. First is what has already been mentioned -- the better selection of weights, if you can't spend the money for at least the basics at home.
The second reason is if it helps motivate you. For some people that works -- for some people it does the opposite. (If you're bashful about being around serious lifters -- which you shouldn't be -- going to a gym won't do you any good at all.)
A third reason is safe technique -- and it's important, especially for someone new to this. If you are working out at home, be careful about working out alone. Try to get a workout buddy. Heavy weights need a spotter. Plus, I've gotten terrific advice as far as lifting form from the regulars at a gym.
