My wife wants to lose weight and fat. Her doc told her to just do cardio(tredmill and aerobics) and not weight lifting to lose what she wants. I have told her to lift to gain muscle and that will help to burn the fat. She says she is going to do what the doc says and not lift. How can I convince her to lift and that more muscle will help?

Could have her see a doc. Have her speak with a trainer at the gym. I am very sure they would recommend both! Or find info on here or other places online and as ravenwolf said, get her to read it.

Just from the info you've given us, I see nothing wrong with just cardio to lose weight and fat along with a good diet. Mind you, I take it that your wife's goal is just to lose weight and fat and not to gain muscle. The quickest way is to do cardio first and then if she is interested, then do the weight lifting. If she does weight lifting first, it's not going to burn the fat off as fast as cardio does, but just increase her muscles, pushing the fat out, thus giving a very unpleasant image in the mirror. I say follow the doc

A trainer at the gym would be the best to covince her... remind her when doctors go to school they have to learn a TON... exercise, nutrition, and weight loss is not something the majority of them have spent too much time on.

I totally agree with ravenwolf. Have her read some of the posts here and sign up for a program. She can lose the weight with just dieting and cardio, but to keep it off she needs to add weight training to her daily routine as well. I am a prime example of that. With the muscle I have gained, it has helped me maintain my weight without having to diet and now I don't need to do a lot of cardio. Also the results she will get from just cardio is weight lose with flabby skin. She needs to use the weights to tone her body. Hope you can convince her to add the weights.

Again I agree with Ravenwolf. Don't nag or preach to your wife. I don't understand though why the dr. would say that. I went through what you are going through. I have been working out for quite a while, until my wife started joining me at the gym. At first she was just doing cardio, and then....she worked with a trainer. It has to happen on her own. But I will tell you this, and ithers will agree, cardio on its own will not help reduce fatty tissue. The weight training has to go with it. And needless to say the diet. Get her to read some mags, leave them around for her to read. Hope we helped.

Here is her deal like most here have said weight lifting is the way to go along with cardio. As ageis said ther is some benefit to doing jsut cardio first to loose some weight. Obviously I do not think it is good to just do that. However that said most women and many overweight men are scared to go to a gym to lift, cardio is I guess a safe haven for them. they fear being made fun of etc. Woman have that fear and the fear of "bulking" up like a man. I would have her go to a gym and do cardio, have her comeon here as you at first to just read and see what ft is all about. ALso get some reading material around the house about the benefits of weightlifting. Try to ease it on her so to speak. As always keep us updated!
