Wow, so here I was lookin' over this and wishing I could buy a $1000 eliptical or a universal gym. Tirns out to get started all I needed was my tv and myself.
I did a cardio workout today, just a few minutes ago. I turned on my satelite to the digital radio, tuned it to the 'Dance' channel. Set a timer on my stove for 45 mins. My toddler and I started dancing! On the fast songs I gave more. I ran in place, I punched, did pretend jumpin jacks. I am amped! not fatigued at all. My soreness from starting the FT home fitness plan, was eased by geting my blood moving.
So, does one have to have a certain routine? I don't think so. I think to just get started, you need to move! Get hot sweat! push yourself some. Make sure ALL your movements are control and not just momentum.
With all do respect, I find that these pro trainers are likely very helpful to already established atheletes. For the 'couch tator' their level is quite pretty, but baby steps.

Good for you! you have managed to see the basic idea! You just need to move - more than you usually do and with more intensity.Your body really doesn't know the difference between elliptical trainers and dancing.
One of the best types of cardio is enjoyable, free and the whole family can do it - go for a walk! gradually increase your time and intensity.
It is important to include some strength training and flexibility training as well, but lifting your toddler up for repititions and doing some basic calisthenics can fit the bill for strength (until you need a higher level of resistance), and stretching doesn't need to be complex either.
