I like to call it lean muscle mass, and for me I lift, do cardio and eat every three hours. I have competed many times and find on the off season I put on a little more muscle, because I'm training heavier and eating more complex carbs and when I diet down for a show I switch to higher reps, more cardio and less carbs and that is my formula for lean muscle mass year round.
See you in the gym

Dendy but you're not doing both at the same time as the original poster askedif it was possible...
You gain muscle because you're increasing your total caloric intake through carbs....and youre losing bodyweight for contests because you're cutting calories from your total caloric intake(or creating a caloric deficit through decreased calories and cardio)...
when you're gaining muscle you're also gaining more bodyfat....it's almost impossible to put on just muscle...no matter how cleanly you eat or how many meals u eat a day....
vice versa when you're dieting you're going to be losing fat as well as muscle....also very little u can do about it....you're going to lose at least some muscle....there are ways to minimize muscle lose...but you'll still be losing some...
as a complete beginner it's possible to do both just because your body is not used to clean eating and consistant training...however as you progress you'll start reaching a limit and how well u can do either of this at the same time...there's going to be a tradeoff eventually....

Yea that is true. I do gain fat along with muscle, thats why I hate bulking up on the off season and yea I do lose some muscle getting ready for a show.(Natural of course). I guess we do have to train with a goal in mind or we are spinning our wheels.
Thanks Menace.

I think it dpends a lot on the %age of body fat you posess. I have known people that were very heavy to go down in fat % and gain muscle tone. the problem is that the body will sence at some point that it is losing its reserves and by decreasing muscle mass it will aid energy conservation.

ironmonga 'muscle tone'is somewhat misleading because you can acommplish it in two ways....lose body fat or gain muscle....which can be done whether you're bulking or dieting....

my bodyfat drops every week, and my muscle just makes up for the loss all i do is just pump iron and eat healthy.
