Ok if this gets too vauge and hard to follow just yell at me LOL! Allright, I have benn giving this a lot of thought for a number of years. I was an Anthropology major in college, so it kind a fell into that topic. It has to do with our bodies, what we eat, and as a species what we have become. I have read a lot on protein, supplements, steriods etc. I was wondering what leads some, who are not neccessiarly going to become either a pro bodybulider or go into pro sports, turn to drugs. I understand why some do it for their jobs, but why the ave joe? If you look at our past, when we ate a diet rich in proteins, natural fats, and veges, we were doing allright. If you look at the ancient greeks, they had the real first BBuliding contests, yet they did not do it with drugs. I can understand those that can not gain yearning for that big buff body, much the same way I yearn for that hard cut BB look. But I know that I would never use drugs. For that matter I rarely use any kind of medication. I have always been healthy, hardly ever get sick. That may be my genes talking or maybe the fact that I have always eaten a lot of veges, etc. What I am trying to say, and I guess what kinda bothers me is this attitude amoungst the younger ( I am not attacking anyone here)people to want to use a fast approach to what even for pros is a long haul. I mean we see it here on ft all the time...." what are you taking, what cycle is it, what about supplements, how can I get huge in 2 weeks etc"......And I see it from a few older people as well. What causes that, I get troubled by all the talk on some boards about drugs and what will work with what. As someone here posted a while ago....."it really is simple, eat right lift hard, and heavy, sleep and do the cardio. Then you will se results." Ok I hope this made some sense, thanks for listening.

Very interesting thought's mutt. I'm no expert, but it seems to me that all this "quick fix" fitness and bodybuilding stuff (not to say that I don't use some of it) dovetails perfectly with the typical american pysce which is: "I want it now". Everything is fast and rushed in this country. We love our fast food, brew thru's, and overnight shipping. We all want to lose 35lbs of body fat in two weeks and gain 40lbs in muscle in one week. Patience and hard work are not things you see in a creatine advertisement. I don't see our "I want it now" culture changing any time soon.

I understand the want for the quick fix, when I was a kid and weighed 260+ at 5 foot 9 I wanted the quick fix. But I was taught that you worked for what you wanted. I once saved my money for a year to buy a coat. I still have it, the same for my workouts, it is quality instead of quanity. Oh well I agree it will not change soon.

You hit the nail on the head. Alot of people were not taught to earn you have to work. To many people take the easy way out, no matter how risky.

True, however, even taking supplements, it does take hard work and dedication as there is no quick fix or miracle drug. I tried very hard to lose the weight without supplements and it was not working. The supplements helped, but I still work my butt off. I know people that take the supplements and don't do the work. They are not gonna get the results that they want unless you sweat and make it hurt. Before you take any supplements, you need to do the research on it.

Good observation Mutt. Lisa, your experience is a good one, but it seems like many of the people looking for supps and that quick fix, have JUST started working out and I think those are the ones that Mutt is talking about. I think everyone should do what you did, work hard and when they hit that plateau, maybe then start with the supplementing.

Mutt that was a good one one of the best post Ive seen, I have to agree with all of it. Fast seems to be the common goal for any thing any more. It sounds like I have a similar background I was always big and the teasing in school the lack of self confidence I think is what drives people into drugs and other things. I too had a family with strong values which helped me a lot along the way. I have recently even stopped taking the whey protein shakes as I thought it was not right it just seemed like the right thing to do at the time, and I think supps have there place along with vitamins to some degree but people are not trying there own hard work and dietary habbits first they are relying on man made substances to assist or do the work for them. Natural is better in long run always. My 2 cents.
Thanks for letting me be part of this :)

Here I come with my 2 cents....

I think that there are several different reasons for the supplement..Roid quick fix mentality. Once of the more common, and probably dangerous ones is what I call "The Seeker".

I fell victim to this line of thinking for many years and had quite a few horrible consequences as a result.

Basicly what it boils down to is seeking happiness... peace..whatever... in outside things.

- broad examples are - if I get this new car...I'll be happy then, get this job, get huge, etc....

Unfortunatly, with few exceptions, the contentment seeked in this manner will always elude us.

Many people (I am an excellent example of this) take this failure as a sign that I didn't go far enough, or did it good enough, or didn't get extreme enough with whatever it was....ie...need an even better car, need even better job, need to get even bigger...hotter girlfriend....then I'll be happy.

What we end up with, are some really good stories to tell about some stupid stuff we did, but the knawing sense that things aren't right.

The seeking continues....and on and on...A lot of people look inward at some point and figure out that these outside things aren't the things that make us happy...it's all inside...The outside things may enhance our experience...give us something to do while we're here..etc...but you'll never find the answer in a roid..muscle..diet...car..boat..girl..boy...etc...(in my case..drugs)

Some of us...(like me) don't get it for a loooooonnnng time, it brings us to our knees, and stubbornly we finally break down and realize these truths.

In the meantime a lot of people will get rich off of this thinking, and even more will get hurt, but I think in the grand scheme it's how we learn.

Brian's Philosophy 101 class has now concluded..please leave your assignments on the table as you leave....lol

Take from this what works for you, disregard it in it's entirety if it doesn't ring a note with you.

Seekers......I feel you...and I believe you'll find your way...we always do...

I am amazed to find others that understand what I was saying. As I said before this is something that i have been thinking about for a long time. It has ties to other things like why some feel like stealing etc. I really feel that if you have to struggle somwhat to get what you want the rewards in the end are that much better.

Very well said. Many things in life have brought me to my knees.
If I had never failed or struggled at things I would never have the joy of success. Sometimes the ride might be bumpy but I have learned to enjoy the journey.
Short term sacrifice long term success.
I have learned the hard way but learning through someone else's struggles and mistakes helps as well.

:) Melissa
