Hi everyone,

I was looking at my progess charts and noticed that some of them have remained the same, especially chest & biceps, due to me not increasing my weight that I am lifting. I don't want to gain muscle underneath fat, so what should I due to increase my progress. At the moment I am lifting weights for about 30 minutes, then I do 30 minutes of cardio. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Sidney

"I don't want to gain muscle underneath fat" ??

I'm not sure I know what your goals are based on your post. My assumption is that if you're working out you want to gain lean muscle mass and/or lose fat. If you're wanting to increase strength you're going to have to increase the weights or intensity, or both.

Mike's right...we don't know what your goals are. It would help if you filled out your showcase profile and tell us more about yourself (goals, stats, gender, etc.).

Good luck!

If you gain muscle under the fat, it will work together to help lose fat. I have been on many diets but have seen the best results while lifting. You also reshape your body, so I don't know why you wouldn't want to gain muscle. For abs, if you are trying to lose inches, I would recommend using no weights until your body fat% is down, but the rest of your body is fair game.

I don't want to get too muscular. Some of the exercises have become to easy, and I don't want to increase the weight I am lifting for fear of becoming bigger.

What about increasing reps, can I do that, without bulking up? Or do I have to increase my weight and the reps?

Thanks,

Sidney

Well, it seems to me that you'll get extremely bored if your exercises are too easy, so just for the sake of keeping some excitement in your workout, I say up the weight. I really don't think you have to worry too much about getting BIG, but then I read your profile and saw that you don't want definition either, which is quite confusing to me, but I think as long as you keep your bodyfat up, you won't have to worry too much about the definition thing, if that is really what you meant.

Sidney - It looks like everyone wants to offer some advice but have no idea what you're really trying to do. But what do I know, I'm sitting here typing in a room full of parrots. :)

Hmmm I hate that one..... WOMEN DON'T JUST BULK UP!!!!!!!!!!!

How do you ever want to touch and shape the muscle if you don't provoke them with just a tiiiiny little work and pain?!!!!!

Stop talking nonsense and start working to get a beautiful body instead of wasting your time.
It's your choice. You can stay as you are or you can change things.

Hmmmmmm!

I guess I'm not really explaining this very well, judging from the comments, so let me try again. My goals at this time is to lose weight, tone, and yes some definition would be a bonus, I'd love to have great abs/arms.

In order to get these results can I increase my weight? I think the answer will be yes, since I know it will get boring if I don't. I'm not afraid of the pain, never was, but I can bulk up very quickly - it happened in the past.

I will say this it is going extremely well, I have lost 10lbs!!

That makes more sense Sidney. You can keep toning without bulking up. I think Nina is probably the best one to answer this since I don't know the female reactions to some things. :) If it was me and I had your goals, I'd increase the weight when able but also keep the reps high in the 12-15 range. At the same time, I'd cut back on carbs and possibly increase my protein. Increased cardio can also slow down the bulking trend.

Mike thanks for the great advice. It would appear that I am on the right track. I have kept my reps high (16-20),and just increased my cardio to 45 minutes. I never thought about increasing my protein intake, very interesting option.

Cheers thanks a lot!
