My left shin starts to hurt after about 5 or 6 min of jogging on the treadmill. I have no idea why this happens. Is there any way to prevent this and what causes these shooting pains? Is it my running technique, shoes, or something??? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Well, several reasons come to mind. Have you had these before? Did you notice when this started to happen (i.e. after a high-impact exercise movement, etc.)?

It could be shin splints. Is there any swelling? If so, you want to ice it, then rest it.

I would agree with the shin splints diagnosis. Before you start running, try tapping each toe 20-30 times to stretch out those muscles. If that is too easy for you, you can put a small dumbell on your foot, and lift it as you tap. This should ease any pain you have. If not, as always, consult your physician! :)

I get a lot of lower leg problems. I have flat feet and good running shoes help out a lot. You may want to check what kind of arch you have and buy shoes made for your type of arch. Make sure that you stretch well before running.

Try avoiding impact cardio for a while and see how your legs respond. You know small constant pain very often leads to bigger pain, and if you have an accident you can say goodbye to training for 1-3 months.

Don't take any risks.

Rest and choose the bike for a while, and see how it goes.

It could just be that you have not stretched enough (proper stretches for the problem area) prior to running. Hopefully that's all it is.

Wow!! Finally someone who has the same problem I did!! I experienced those for a long, long time everytime I ran on the treadmill...I tried stretching out before...stretching afterwards...nothing seemed to work. Are you setting the treadmill at an incline? I noticed that when I did use an incline..I would get them..so I tried leaving it at 0 incline...and it seemed to work.

I don't get them as often as I used to....but I do notice that when I incline the mill a little...I start to feel the discomfort.
So you might try that...I know exactly the pain you are talking about...

Though, it may be that we run a certain way..don't know for sure...

Good Luck...and let us know how things go for you!!

Thanks for the advice. I finally got fed up with the soreness and went to the doctor. It turns out that I am flat footed, more so on my left foot. He recommended a running shoe with an arch to compensate. Hopefully this will help because i had purchased new shoes earlier and also ran on 0 incline, yet still had the same problem. But I'll see what happens.

You could also try orthotics. Good luck...
