Hello. I really need to get into to shape. I have recently decided to join the Air Force, and as you may know, they have a mile and a half run. Well, the last time i ran a mile i timed myself at 6:34 seconds(yes, i know that is horrible). I don't leave for basic until October 3, 2005 so i need so help. I would like to come into basic running about a 9:00-9:20 or close to that. Can someone(anyone) please let me know any workout plans, or exercises that would help me get my time down. I would prefer interval training cause i have heard that is works the best, but if anyone has anyone better please let me know.

This is what my track coach does. Over distance training, for example if u run the 100, practice with the 200. If you run the 200 practice with the 400. For 1.5 miles try practicing running 2.5 miles or so. I'm not really a coach or anything so thats just what i THINK would be good.

the key is to lengthen your stride. strengthening your legs using squats and deadlifts will help with this. It doesn't sound like you have that much further to go for a 9 minute time. I would bring a stop watch to a near by track, and set your running pace to 6:00 mile or 90 sec laps and see how far you can maintain that pace. Every workout should warrant alittle further distance wise. You will find that when you are faced with the goal of distance that it becomes more of a mind game. good luck and welcome to ft.
