They mainly increase power. They are what's known as a plyometric exercise. that sort of thing is good if you've been training a while and are interested in a particular sport where you need to build up power to be good (e.g. boxing, martial arts etc). There are other plyometric exercises which can increase the power in your legs or calves too, all of which are useful if you play sports and are interesting in improving your ability to play your sprt of choice rather than building muscle. Although you will build some muscle doing them, so far as I can see, the best way to increase muscle mas is through progresive weight training.
